Amid growing concern about math proficiency, high-impact tutoring (HIT) has emerged as the leading evidence-based intervention, accelerating learning and strengthening algebra readiness. Like much of the country, student math performance in Oklahoma remains below pre-pandemic levels, underscoring the need for continued investment in supports that help students catch up.

The Oklahoma Governor’s office, in partnership with Arnold Ventures (a national philanthropic organization), has launched a $10 million matching initiative to help districts expand access to high-impact tutoring, with a special emphasis on grades 8 and 9 math. Districts that identify and commit public funds toward Grade 8 or Grade 9 math in-school-day tutoring can receive dollar-for-dollar matched support, effectively doubling their resources to accelerate student learning. With additional subsidies through private philanthropy and potentially the OK state AmeriCorps office, your district’s costs could be less.

By the time students reach Algebra I, many are already years behind in math.

Research shows that success in Algebra 1 will increase the likelihood of graduation four-fold. Algebra 1 is a gateway to high school graduation and a predictor of students’ long-term earnings. A national US Department of Education study found that 80% of students who drop out of high school cite course failures as their top reason, with Algebra 1 as the course most failed. Research from the American Institutes for Research suggests that only 20% of students who fail Algebra 1 in ninth grade will go on to receive a high school diploma, compared to 85% of those who pass the course. Clearing that milestone preserves graduation pathways and tens of thousands of dollars in per-pupil funding that would be lost to students dropping out of school. Helping students during this pivotal time multiplies their opportunities long after high school.
