John King, former US Secretary of ED, praises Saga Education
March 24, 2021John King, president and CEO of the Education Trust, and the former U.S. Secretary of Education during the Obama Administration, provides opening remarks about the importance of personalization to support youth amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and how Saga Education is influencing the k-12 landscape.
One recent report revealed that since the pandemic, students have learned just 87 percent of the reading and only 67 percent of the math that their grade-level peers learned during more typical years. But in schools that primarily serve students of color, the numbers are substantially lower — 77 percent in reading and 59 percent in math.
“These challenges are real, but there is a solution, and the solution is to address kids’ academic and socioemotional needs. Saga is doing exactly what we know works and what the evidence tells us will work—providing intensive, targeted tutoring in the context of strong, positive mentoring relationships. This research is showing that we can actually help students make very rapid progress. We can help students catch up and avoid the risk of lost generation of students because of Covid-19 ” -John King, former U.S. Secretary of Education
